Why should I take private ski lessons?

When you take private ski lessons the focus is on you.  It's all about what you want to learn, who you want to learn with, what type of runs or slopes you want to ski on.  You can ski and progress at the pace you desire.  You choose the time and duration of your ski lesson.  You get individual instruction and feedback.  You can request a specific instructor which maintains consistency in learning and progress over multiple days and establishes rapport and friendship.  During your lesson time you'll also get to use the Ski School Express lift lanes.  Also if you have children who want to ski together but would be split up in children's ski school due to age brackets or different ability levels you can keep them together with a private instructor.

What about group lessons?

At Telluride, group ski lessons begin at 11:00 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. each day.  Students assemble early and describe their ability level and goals to instructors.  Students are then grouped according to similar ability levels.  Group size and make up varies from day to day.  Each group is assigned an instructor.  The lesson content and breaks will be determined by consensus of the group.  The terrain and pace is determined by the instructor to accommodate the safety and pace of the weakest skier in the group.  If you are a slower one in your group you may feel uncomfortable but, for safety's sake, don't take unnecessary risks just to appease your group.

Your personality will probably determine how much you enjoy group or private ski lessons.  Relaxed, patient individuals who are willing to go along with whatever the rest of the group wants usually have a great time in group ski lessons.  If you enjoy skiing in a group and meeting new people every day then group lessons can be a great way to make new skiing friends.  Individuals who want to ski at a particular pace or location may want that choice offered through private ski lessons.  High intensity, driven, goal oriented personalities often get impatient with waiting on slower skiers and sharing the instructor's attention with others unless the others are close friends.   When taking group ski lessons you may have to sacrifice the level of individual attention,  feedback and faster progress you might achieve in private ski lessons.
